Vernon O'Dea was born May 11, 1922, on a farm near Montrose, SD, to Joseph and Alma (Larson) O'Dea. He attended senior high school at Hartford, SD, and then began working at John Morrell and Company. Vernon entered the US Army and served during WWII. Following his discharge, he returned to work at Morrell's.
On June 25, 1949, he was united in marriage to Lois Holt, in Sioux Falls. The couple made their home here, where Vern worked for NSP and Dells Auto Glass. Lois preceded him in death in August 1972.
Vernon took up a career in music in the early 1950's. Along with his band, The Lonesome Cowboys, he played a number of local venues including honky-tonks and roadside barrooms. As with many artists, his creativity became his driving passion. At times, Vernon was paid with cigarettes, vegetables, and a handshake of thanks.
Vernon began playing his guitar at the age of 12. Legend has it; he sold a hog off the farm and with the proceeds, bought his first guitar. He was an avid fan of Hank Williams, Ernest Tubbs, Johnny Cash, and Willie Nelson. In addition to playing and listening, he was an accomplished composer and writer. In 2005, Vernon was personally honored when he was inducted into the SD Country Western Hall Of Fame.
Vern's good-humored spirit will be well cherished by all that knew him; his music will live on.
Grateful for having shared his life are his sons, Pat O'Dea, Sioux Falls, SD, Tom O'Dea and his wife, Sheila, Sioux Falls, SD; two grandchildren, Jared and Jamie O'Dea; brothers, Orrin O'Dea, Garden Grove, CA; Cletus O'Dea, (Doreen), Lexington, KY, Clifford O'Dea (Theresa), Sioux Falls, SD, Dennis O'Dea (Marvia), Hartford, SD; sisters, Yvonne Doss, Sioux Falls, SD, Donna O'Dea, Sioux Falls, SD; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 Tuesday May 2, 2006, at St. George Catholic Church, Hartford, SD.
