Carl Erling Sonneson, 89, of Hermantown, died Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at Golden Oaks, Proctor. He was born in 1923 to Iver and Carrie Sonneson, raised in Saginaw and graduated from Alborn High School. During World War II, Carl worked at an ammunition plant in Rock Island, IL.
He married Phyllis Ryan on August 25, 1945 and raised two sons. Together with his wife, they operated the Five Corners store, gas station, and apartments for six years.
Carl worked for DM&IR railroad and retired from the Hermantown school district in 1979 after 27 years as mechanic/bus driver. He loved to read Westerns and feed and watch the birds. Carl was also an avid stream trout fisherman and deer hunter.
Carl is preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis in February 2001; his parents; brother, Clarence; sisters, Margaret Lobe and Mildred "Millie" Granholm; and grandson, Christopher Sonneson.
He is survived by his sons, John (Sharon) of Mandan and Jim (Roseann) of Hermantown; sisters, Verna (Gene) Puline of Esko and Barb (Bill) Carlson of Naugaune, MI; grandchildren, Jim R. (Tracy), Amy (Matt) King, both of Hermantown, Joshua (Katie), Stephanie (fiancé Brad Nash) Sonneson, and Jeremy (Brandie) all of ND; and great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Molly, Drew, Megan, Alex, and Kyler. Carl is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
The family would like to extend a very heartfelt thank you to the entire staff at Golden Oaks in Proctor for the wonderful care that they provided to Carl.
